The Vehicle Tracking System offered by REIL,comprises of the Vehicle mount unit, whichdetermines its positional data by communicatingwith the Geographical Positioning System (GPS)satellites, and communicating the data with realtime stamp – using the General Packet RadioService (GPRS) / Global System of Mobile(GSM) Communication network to the webservers. The web servers comprise of theCommunication server, Database / GIS mapserver and Backup Web server. The authorizeduser can access this web server through Internetfor which a computer system and broadbandconnection would be the only requirement at theuser site.
The vehicle mount unit is a microprocessor-controlled device, which employs the extendedfeatures of the Global Positioning System (GPS)to determine the position of the vehicle in termsof Longitude and Latitude with the date and timestamp, GPRS and GSM technologies toperiodically send the captured positional data tothe web servers.
Wherever the GPRS / GSM network coverage isnot there; the data logger of the vehicle mountunit is made capable of storing upto 200positional transactions. Most of the cities ofIndia are well covered in the GPRScommunication by various service providers. However thevehicle mount unit can send thepositional data through GSM communicationalso. This feature is useful while deployingvehicles in the areas where GPRS coverage isnot there. However, the usages and roamingcharges would be applicable as per the effectiveplan of the GSM service provider.
In order to cover worst-case eventualities whenneither of GPRS and GSM network is available, then the unit can store upto 200 transactions, which is sent to the web server on availability ofthe communication network.
The positional data is forwarded to the webservers, which comprises of Communication, database server and map servers. The data isauthenticated, validated, stored, interpreted andsuperimposed on digital maps of the location. The remotely placed Backup server backs up thedata. The user can see various graphical andtextual details pertaining to movement of thevehicle, over the Computer system usingbroadband Internet connectivity.
Keeping in view that the PSTN or ISDN internet connectivity provides lesser bandwidth, which isinsufficient to handle the graphical images; it isrecommended to use the broadband internetconnection only. The digital maps of the area concerned, shall be arranged from the agencies concerned.
